There is a persistent myth that a woman’s most photographable years are behind her once she turns forty. That the images worth making are the ones from when she was younger, thinner, less complicated by life.

Having photographed women of all ages for over a decade, I can tell you directly: this is wrong. Some of the strongest portraits I have ever made have been of women in their forties, fifties, sixties, and beyond. Not despite their age. Because of it.

What changes after forty on camera

Something happens to many women after forty that is genuinely difficult to photograph in younger clients: they stop performing. They stop trying to look a certain way for the camera and simply exist in front of it. That quality — ease, presence, self-knowledge — is compelling on camera. It makes a portrait feel real rather than staged, alive rather than manufactured.

Women I photograph over forty know who they are. They have earned the lines around their eyes. They have made peace with parts of themselves they used to fight. They have stopped apologising for things that never needed an apology. That shows in photographs. It photographs beautifully.
