What to Wear for Your Portrait Session: A Practical Style Guide
The most common question before a portrait session is: what do I wear? The good news is that the answer is practical and straightforward. Here is what you need to know.
Start with fit, not fashion
The most important thing about what you wear is how it fits. A perfectly fitted simple top will photograph better than a beautiful but slightly-too-large blouse every time. Fitted does not mean tight. It means tailored, structured, and right for your body. When clothes fit well, they give you definition on camera.
Solid colours over patterns
Bold patterns, logos, and busy prints pull the eye away from your face and date quickly. Solid colours photograph clearly and keep the focus where it belongs. Deep jewel tones, classic neutrals, and rich earth tones all work well. Black is always strong. Ivory and cream are timeless. Deep burgundy, forest green, and navy are all excellent choices.
Bring more than one option
Pack two or three outfits that cover different registers. Something classic and polished, something softer, something that feels most like your everyday self. Having options gives us flexibility on the day. We will look at what you have brought and help you choose what works best with the lighting we are using.
Think about necklines
Portrait photography focuses largely on your face, so your neckline matters. V-necks are universally flattering and draw the eye upward. Off-shoulder and wide necklines look luxurious on camera. High necklines can work well with the right jewellery. The one thing to be careful of is a very close-to-the-chin neckline, which can foreshorten the neck on camera.
Keep jewellery simple
Simple jewellery usually works best. A delicate necklace, earrings that frame the face, a ring that means something to you. Statement pieces can work well if they feel authentically you. Avoid anything that clatters or moves significantly during the shoot.
