How to Prepare for Your Portrait Session: Everything You Need to Know

You booked your portrait session. That first step is often the hardest, and you have already taken it. Now here is everything you need to arrive feeling calm, confident, and ready.

Start with your skin

In the week before your session, moisturise every day. Well-hydrated skin photographs clearly and without dullness. If you get spray tans, book it two to three days before the shoot, not the day before. This gives the colour time to settle into something natural. Avoid trying new skincare products or treatments in the days leading up. This is not the time for surprises.

Nails matter more than you think

Your hands appear in many portrait photographs. They rest on your shoulder, move through your hair, or frame your face. A fresh manicure makes a clear difference. Classic nudes, soft pinks, and deep burgundies all work well. Chipped polish is the one thing to fix before you arrive.

Plan your wardrobe the night before

Do not leave this until the morning of your shoot. Lay out your outfits the night before and try them on in good light. Fitted clothing photographs better than loose or baggy styles. Structure and tailoring give your body definition and elegance on camera. Solid colours tend to photograph better than busy patterns. Bring two or three outfit options. We will help you choose on the day.

Get a good night’s sleep

This one is obvious but it genuinely shows. Rested eyes and a relaxed face make a significant difference. Try to get to bed at a reasonable hour the night before your session.

Arrive with your hair and makeup in mind

At our Dublin studio, professional hair and makeup is included in your session. You do not need to arrive camera-ready. Our artist handles everything. Arrive with clean, dry hair and your normal moisturiser on. If you have a specific look in mind, bring reference photos. The more we know about what makes you feel like yourself, the better the result.

Leave the self-criticism at the door

The most important thing you can do before your session is make a decision. You are going to be present for it. Not in your head picking at every angle. Not worrying about how you compare to someone else. Just present, open, and willing to be seen. That is where the best photographs come from, every time.
