You Do Not Need to Lose Weight Before Your Portrait Session

I hear it constantly. “I would love to do a session but I need to lose a bit of weight first.” Or, “maybe when I am back in shape.” Or simply, “not yet.”

I understand the feeling. But I want to be direct with you, because I have seen too many women put off something genuinely worthwhile while waiting for a version of themselves that never quite arrives.

There is no “right time” body

There is no version of you that is more worth photographing than the one standing here right now. The woman you are today, with her history, her laugh lines, her shape, is the one worth celebrating. Not a hypothetical future version.

I have photographed women in their twenties and women in their seventies. Women who have had cancer, women who have had babies, women going through divorce, and women celebrating thirty years of marriage. In every session, without exception, there was real beauty to find and bring forward.

Posing changes everything

One of the skills I bring to every session is a deep understanding of how to pose and light every body type. The way a person stands, the angle of a shoulder, the position of a hand: these are not accidents. They are deliberate choices, and they are how I make sure every client looks extraordinary in front of the camera.

You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to know your “good side.” That is my job.

The photographs you skip are the ones you will regret

I have spoken to women in their sixties who wish they had portraits from their forties. Women in their forties who wish they had portraits from their thirties. Time moves faster than we expect, and the photographs we never took are the ones that leave a gap.

Your children and the people who love you do not see what you see in the mirror. They see you. And they deserve photographs of you taken now.

What actually happens in a session

Most clients arrive nervous. Nearly all of them leave surprised by what they saw. Not because something changed physically, but because they spent a few hours being fully looked after: professional hair, makeup, expert direction, and a space with zero judgment. By the end, most clients are laughing and wondering why they waited so long.

You do not need to lose anything. You just need to show up. If you want to understand exactly what a portrait photography Dublin session involves, our full guide covers everything from start to finish. Book your complimentary consultation today.
